Sony Introduces Best 400mm F2.8 G Master Prime Lens

The product of extensive research and testing, Sony’s brand new FE 400mm F2.8 GM OSS lens is the first large aperture super-telephoto prime to combine the E-mount line-up. This exciting new lens generates brilliant picture quality, exceptional focusing speed and precision while at the same time boasting the lightest weight in its class and a very balanced layout. It’s the perfect choice for professional sports, wildlife and nature photographers, and also a perfect match for Sony’s broad line-up of high-speed E-mount bodies including α9, α7R III and more.
To best take advantage of the rapidly evolving shooting and focusing rates of Sony’s newest cameras, the FE 400mm F2.8 GM OSS lens features two newly developed high-speed XD (extreme lively ) Linear Motors which push the lens’ focus group, reaching up to a 5x improvement[ii] in moving-subject tracking functionality. These motors are supported by specially developed movement algorithms to minimise lag and uncertainty and control noise levels, resulting in exceptionally quick, accurate and quiet autofocus performance. This allows the lens to capture lively, fast moving athletes or wildlife with ease.
A part of the Sony’s new G Master Series lenses, the new big aperture super-telephoto prime lens features an unbelievable level of picture quality and detail, with exceptional contrast and resolution preserved all the way to the corners of this picture. The distinctive optical design comprises three fluorite components which help to minimise chromatic aberration and suppress any quantity of color bleeding.
Along with the remarkable resolution, the lens features an 11-blade circular aperture mechanism that allows it to produce extremely natural and gorgeous background defocus or’bokeh’. Each lens can be individually tested and adjusted at manufacturing point to achieve maximum picture quality and’bokeh’.
The brand new FE 400mm F2.8 GM OSS is compatible with Sony’s 1.4x and 2.0x E-mount tele-converters, producing outstanding imaging performance at extended focal lengths[iii] while maintaining fast, precise AF performance.

Weighing in at only 2897g, the brand new FE 400mm F2.8 GM OSS lens provides a degree of handheld and portability manoeuvrability that has never before been achieved in a lens of its class. The remarkably light weight of this lens is achieved through an advanced optical design which features three fluorite elements, using a reduced variety of elements deployed at the front part of the barrel, in addition to the liberal usage of durable magnesium alloy components.
Moreover, repeated field evaluations and analysis by professional photographers across the world have led to a lens design which isn’t front-heavy, reducing moment of inertia that resists rotation up to 50 percent in comparison with SAL500F40G[iv].
To withstand the harsh conditions of sporting events and wildlife photography, Sony’s lens new FE 400mm F2.8 GM OSS is constructed with a durable magnesium alloy and a strong, lightweight carbon fibre hood. The lens can also be dust and moisture resistant[v], and its own front element is coated with fluorine to resist fingerprints and dirt.
There is also an ample amount of hard controls on the lens, including a’Full-Time DMF’ change to immediately engage manual focus at any point, customisable focus hold buttons at four distinct locations on the lens barrel – allowing easy access of an Eye AF for instance, and a focus ring which features Linear Response MF for fine, responsive manual focus. The new lens also includes built-in optical stabilisation for lively sports action and three distinct’Mode’ configurations, including a new Mode 3[vi] setting using an innovative algorithm that ensures simpler framing when after moving subjects.
The FE 400mm F2.8 GM OSS carries a drop-in filter slot[viii] that accepts ø 40.5millimeter ND along with other filter types, in addition to the discretionary VF-DCPL1 Drop-in Circular Polarising Filter. The VF-DCPL1 filter can be rotated to achieve the desired polarisation while installed in the lens.
The latest system software update (Version 3.00) for α9 (ILCE-9) provides assistance for its brand new FE 400mm F2.8 GM OSS (SEL400F28GM) lens to optimise optical image stabilisation functionality and enables continuous shooting auto focus tracking even when aperture is higher than F11.
The update also provides added option to input camera serial number to the Exif information, a feature that has been strongly requested by professional sports photographers and photojournalists. Additionally, several other updates to the α9 camera happen to be implemented with the new firmware, such as improved auto focus speed in low light conditions, enhanced continuous AF functionality when monitoring a moving subject, and decreased discharge time lag when shooting with flash.
